Moving away from Wool...

In this collaborative design project it has been decided to produce a more reasonably priced range of clothing based on the eveningwear of designer Ashley Isham. Isham is experimental in his use of colour and his fabric choice; he often uses a lot of embellishment and is best known for his signature draping and strong tailoring (Ashley Isham, n.d.). Ashley Isham was chosen in order to develop my skills by exploring different fabric types - in this case jersey.  I been fortunate enough to spend two seasons on a placement with him.  His work seems to dovetail with my work in that the garments are structured but also explore drapery in evening wear, and look into corsetry and specialist fabric finishes.

For the purposes of this assignment a selection of strapless evening gowns will be produced by studying Isham’s design ‘handwriting’ . His “classic” draped jersey dresses, which have many layers of interlinings including a padded corset for support, will be focused upon. An attempt will be made, by following Ashley Isham’s design ethos of stylishness, flamboyance with a core of elegance, all contained in the beautiful feminine silhouette, to create an ever-elegant evening gown with affordability that would sit in Isham’s Diffusion Line: “AI by Ashley Isham”.

In order to achieve the affordability of the garments the patterns will be created on Gerber, which will then be graded according to his size range. An order and a marker will then be made to get the optimum fabric usage. The dresses will still be made to a high standard, with the same finishes and inter-linings Isham would use, but a cheaper fabric might be used and a substitution for the embellishment such as an embroidered fabric may be made.

It will be appealing to his target ‘AI by Ashley Isham’ market to design two draped evening gowns because they are classic yet contemporary. Ashley Isham’s core clientele and loyal customers are mainly in South East Asia (Petrova, 2011) and in the Middle East (AI by Ashley Isham, n.d.). Many of his clientele attend lavish balls, appreciate design and want to stand out from the crowd. These gowns are targeted at modern women who are “all at once inappropriately enticing and yet unbearably unapproachable and Isham's designs evoke, rather, scream this unhindered sensuality” (London Fashion Week spring/summer 2013 live, 2012). Although it is intended that the garments will sit in Isham’s diffusion line, it will still be sitting in the upper mid market ranging in price from £200-£350, a market which has been less affected by the recession.

Furthermore, to keep faithful to Isham’s design ethos, I chose to create two evening gowns, based on Isham’s “classic” draped dress. The intention is to keep the finish of the garments to a very high standard, by still incorporating a cupped corset on the inner of the dress and by using quality fabrics as well as specialist fabric finishes such as the 4 thread over-locker and a pin hem. The corset is a fundamental design detail on this type of dress since if it didn’t have an inner corset the dress wouldn’t work. The corset is what gives this type of garment its structure as well as showing off the feminine body. I have done a lot of experimentation within the corset, creating my own pattern under the direction of Hagger (2004, p.74-79) looking at the fit, the type of fabric she will use and whether it be fused, canvassed or neither.

Final Outcomes.

The current designer has taken frequent inspiration from Isham including fabric choice, the silhouette of the garments and the interlinings; as well as looking at the quality and finish of these garments. The chosen fabrics for the main bodies of the dresses are a silk/viscose jersey and a polyester crepe-de-chine: two very different fabrics, however still in keeping with Isham’s original fabric choice: silk, jersey and satin, which would have been too expensive for the projected garments. Nonetheless, they both have beautiful drape to them and will create a very elegant appearance, while still feeling luxurious to the touch. In order for me to come up with my own twist on these evening gowns I have chosen a muted colour scheme made up of mossy greens and muddy creams. The intention is to create a more sophisticated London look, with the flair of Ashley Isham, by incorporating the suggested embellishment/embroidery contrast fabrics that are such a feature of his designs.

Colour Scheme
There has been much consideration regarding the process behind the pattern cutting to get the best fit possible.  This was achieved by creating the fundamental patterns on Gerber, while simultaneously having alongside the actual draping on the stand, so as to create the gathering featurette around the bust; then digitizing these patterns and smoothing off the lines on the program, thus creating an accurate sample pattern. Besides carrying out multiple fit sessions the designer has paid a lot of attention to detail, by re-toiling on multiple occasions to get the perfect fit that a strapless garment ought to have.

Ashley Isham SS13

This Saturday past the 15th of September, I was privileged enough to attend the Ashley Isham SS13 show, which was held at the gorgeous location of Goldsmith Hall on Foster Lane.

The show was fantastic showcasing all what Ashley does best exquisite drapery juxtaposed with sharp tailoring and not forgetting his signature embellishments. He used a variety of vibrant summer colours including shimmering oranges, cool blues and beautiful geometric prints. Including some unusual fabrics such as neoprene and his usual flowing jerseys and satins.

The show was inspired by the Orphism art movement, which was co-founded by Sonia Delaunay. Delaunay was renowned for her use of strong vibrant colours and geometric shapes. All of which you can see has been translated into his collection.

The music was done by Jodie Harsh and the Models were styled beautifully like hollywood glamour by charlie le mindu. Including super model Alyona Subbotina one of Ashley's Favourite models, whom has been the opener for the past 3-4 shows.

The show had a great atmosphere especially when the puppy came out with the first look, i think the dog almost stole the show. However Ashley redeemed himself with the pure amount of looks. With 53 looks the show had something for everyone, even when you thought it was over a mini collection of colourful jersey dresses finished of a wonderful Vibrant collection. Ashley even dyed his hair blue to carry on the theme of Orphism.

LONDON...

Ok so here is a quick run through that has been happening the past few weeks.

First of all i did my very first commission for a real client. creating a very simple a line dress made from a vintage checked fabric. My client was a 53 year old women, who wanted to be comfortable while still being able to breathe in her clothes as cycles to work.
It was a fantastic opportunity to make a dress for some one and to get paid for it. This also helped fund me to get to london....
Heres a wee sneak peek..

I have just moved down to London to study a Post graduate Diploma in pattern design and garment technology at London College of Fashion. I am vey excited to start i just picked up my student card yesterday so i now officially a student a LCF. But it is all very daunting having to MOVE to london and not have a date to go back home. Starting up a new life down here new friends etc.
So so far it has been going pretty well even though i have only been down for a day or two. But i have stuck gold and found a fantastic little flat sharing with 3 other people. Its on the 7th floor so it is quite high but fantastic views and beautifully decorated i love it.

Next step find a job.....on the list of things to do

Weekend....Managed to snag myself some fashion Show tickets for Designer Ashley Isham held at the stunning venue Goldsmith Hall. Pictures will follow.... so keep your eyes peeled the next few days.

And today, Yes i also managed to get tickets for the 02 Arena in London to See Florence and the Machine!!!!! OMG i cannot WAIT! So excited to see her in December. Ashley Isham

During September 2010 and January 2011 I worked for a company called A.I Designs. Ashley Isham is an evening wear designer based in London, however he is originally from Singapore and regularly travels between his home in London and Singapore.
He dresses a list of celebrities, with a large clientele is Singapore and Asia and often has commissions for royalty. I found out about Ashley Isham from my previous placement at doll. Since then I have been a constant follower of him, I love Ashley Isham designs, and once you work there you realise just how much celebrities approach him for dresses: Kimberly Walsh, Lady GaGa, Cheryl Cole, Geri Hallowell, Florence Walsh and Kylie, just to name a few. So he does get a lot of press, however he doesn’t seem to sell much over here, I think this is because his work is more red carpet and apart from celebrities in Britain we don’t attend formal events that you would wear this sort of dresses.
My whole experience at Ashley Isham’s has been so beneficial I have learned so much during my time there. I would recommend it to anyone, the people there are just so nice and they are there to help you out and learn. Whether it learning how to do a rouleau loop, thread an over locker, how to do a pin hem, everything! And each time I have came back from London I feel like I have grown up a bit more and have more life experience. I love London and hope to get a job down there once I finish university. Even just being in London you are surrounded by fashion all the time, the sample cutter at Ashley’s also worked at Betty Jackson so the past two seasons I have got an invitations to Betty’s show in Somerset House. From being in London I now keep up to date with various new designers.
A Few Quotes from Ashley that I love!!
“Ashley we need to change your name, you now called Junior OK!?”
"So when you getting back to Ireland?”

Shown above is images from Ashley's S/S 11 AND A/W 11-12 and Kimberley Walsh ready for the Oscars wearing Ashley Isham. and Below is me with the Designer himself...
